The Jazz Ensemble at AHS is composed of mainstream jazz instrumentation. Entrance to this group is strictly by audition and students must also be enrolled in a second music class.
The Atlee Jazz Ensemble performs jazz music ranging in styles from swing, bebop, funk, fusion to contemporary. Jazz Ensemble is also offered with a weighted credit component. Students wishing to take Jazz Ensemble for weighted credit must complete extra projects and take private lessons on their instument.
Students auditioning for this ensemble are required to sight read at a high level. In addition, students wishing to double on another instrument may do so with approval from the director.
This select group of students will perform at all concerts and special events as needed throughout the school year. The Atlee Jazz Ensemble performs at the Miss Mechanicsville Pageant, local elementary schools, and attends the District VIII Jazz Festival in April.
